Discovering My Creative Anchor in the Midst of Chaos: A Personal Journey

THE CUSTOM COMPANY UK

Summary: A story of motherhood, resilience, and creativity. How one mother turned life’s chaos into purpose creating The Custom Company UK, a space built from love, strength, and the desire to make something meaningful.

When Everything Changed

Five years ago, my world completley changed. It all started when my little boy, Teddy, made his grand entrance. His arrival was both thrilling and intense, as he was born at 37+4 via emergency c-section.

Those first months felt like a whirlwind of sleepless nights. Teddy was often unsettled, and his cries echoed through the house. He dealt with colic, crying for hours with no clear cause, and his little body would tense up in discomfort. I tried everything—feeding, rocking, swaddling—but the cries continued.

Teddy also had severe reflux, which meant a lot of spit-ups after feeds. I spent countless hours propping him up to ease the reflux, only to see him struggle to fall asleep afterward. His sleep was unpredictable, waking up every couple of hours, sometimes in distress. It was exhausting, not just physically but emotionally, as I tried to figure out his needs. Despite the challenges, every moment was filled with love and the hope of better days ahead.

Navigating Motherhood Through a Pandemic

Just ten months after having my baby, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the world felt upside down. Returning to my demanding role in the NHS was tough; the healthcare system was under so much stress, and I was stepping into single parenthood too. But hey, I powered through! It was exhausting, but I had to provide for my son, even when my energy was running low.

Balancing work, being a mum, and worrying about Teddy's health was a lot. It felt like a never-ending loop of calls, appointments, and referrals—while still trying to show up for work and be there for my little one. Some days blended into each other, but I kept pushing. I knew I had a responsibility to my son, and that kept me going.

Through it all, I discovered how strong I could be — stronger than I ever knew.

Finding Strength in the Storm

There were moments when I felt lost, wondering how to juggle everything. The isolation didn’t help either. The pandemic changed everything, and suddenly, the support I thought I’d have vanished. Family and friends couldn’t visit, and social stuff like baby groups or even a coffee catch-up was off-limits. It was just me, figuring out motherhood in a world that was shut down. But through it all, I learned just how strong I could be. 🌟

Our health visitor was such a blessing! We chatted about some things I'd noticed with Teddy. He wasn't making eye contact, and he was sensitive to certain textures and spaces. Like, he wouldn’t sit on grass or eat fruit, and suddenly he hated baths and would scream when water touched him. During Teddy's routine developmental check, we found he had delays in areas like fine motor skills. Plus, he constantly did things like; spinning in circles and looking at objects from odd angles, his sleep issues, and need for movement to settle. So, we decided it would be beneficial to see a Paediatrician.

Six months later, after meeting with the Community Paediatrician and a 2 part Autism Assessment, Teddy (2 years, 9 months) got his diagnosis:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Language delay
  • Severe Sleep Difficulties,
  • Increased Activity Levels and Sensory Seeking Behaviours,
  • Sensory Processing Difficulties
  • Behavioural Feeding Difficulties

From that moment, I became more than just his mum—I became his voice! 💪 I took on the role of advocate, always fighting with services and healthcare service providers to make sure Teddy got what he needed. Every call, every meeting, every paper—yep, it was a battle to be heard. Sure, it was exhausting and sometimes a bit disheartening, but I was all in! I dove into understanding his needs, taking Autism parenting courses and communication workshops, and even completed a Qualification in “Understanding Autism.” I soaked up every bit of knowledge, determined to support my son the best way I could. The emotional journey was tough, and I often felt lost in a demanding world. But hey, I was doing it all for Teddy, and that kept me going!

Turning Pain Into Purpose

Feeling totally lost, I needed something to help me regain control. Rearranging furniture became my way of finding order in the chaos. It spiralled so much that I ended up in CBT and regular appointments with a wellbeing life coach. He couldn't offer any further advice as I'd tried it all, he would say 'Ive never heard another situation like yours!" and we would just make humour out of the chaos I was living.

My home became a DIY workshop—making desks, tables, even modifying an IKEA bed! I became a regular at B&Q! I can laugh about it now, but in all honesty, during this period I felt overwhelmed and emotionally out of control. What started as a subconscious attempt to relieve stress and ‘fix the problem’, turned into a creative escape, helping me find peace and reconnect with myself. Late-night crafting sessions filled me with satisfaction and the idea that I could turn this passion into more. It wasn't just about crafting anymore; it was about taking control and connecting with others. I purchased a Cricut Machine, a printer and crafting materials and began making personalised gifts and personalising clothing for Teddy and friends and family. I started creating designs for children and fell in love with it.

I opened a shop on Etsy and the orders came rolling in. This hobby became my lifeline, showing me that even in chaos, I can shine.

Building The Custom Company UK

I was still working at the hospital, and without going too much into it, I wasn’t being treated very fairly, and on top of everythig else I could not cope emotionally so I decided to leave, after 13 years service.

The business has continued to grow, but with growth comes an overwhelming demand. The long hours, the sleepless nights, the constant balancing of Teddy’s needs with my work—it’s ongoing. There are times when I feel like I’m running on fumes, but it’s my passion, and I am wholeheartedly dedicated. The energy I pour into my business comes from a place of love and purpose. It's more than just about making a living; it’s about creating something meaningful, for us and for our customers. I won't lie—it's challenging. There are days when I feel like I’m juggling too many balls, constantly trying to keep everything in motion without dropping anything. Yet, despite the exhaustion, I continue to push forward because this business is a reflection of my resilience, my creativity, and my unwavering desire to provide the best future for Teddy.

Embracing the Journey

Reflecting on this blog, I’m amazed at our journey. It's been tough, but the growth, resilience, and love are undeniable. Being Teddy's mum has taught me strength, determination and passion, which fuelled my business and the ability to ‘power through’. My role as his advocate continues every day, fighting for his needs. Our journey’s are still unfolding, learning motherhood and navigating the health system. It's not easy, but it’s my mission, fuelling me daily.

As we continue, I’m committed to creating a loving, supportive environment for Teddy and nurturing the business that brings me so much joy. Each day is a chance to grow and adapt to life’s demands. Embracing the mess, chaos, and victories is part of this beautiful, unpredictable journey.

To anyone feeling lost in the demands of parenting, work, or life—you're not alone. The path might feel lonely, but it doesn’t define your worth. Struggles reveal inner strength. Even dark moments can birth beauty. I'm on this path too, finding moments of clarity amid chaos. Remember, it’s worth it, and so are you. 🌟
